Then and Now

Whenever I'm unsure of whether I've made artistic progress, I play a game I call "THEN and NOW," in which I compare sketchbook pages from a few years ago to recent ones ... I always win this game. I win the confidence that comes from knowing I HAVE made progress. I may not quite be a pro, but baby I've come a long way. Hope you enjoy:

CARICATURE

I didn't really do caricatures in my sketchbook in 2006, but this respectable marker drawing (no pencil beforehand) is the closest thing I found. The 2010 version is from memory, and it caricatures physical features as well as emotions and it describes a relationship. It might be one of my favorite drawings that I have ever done.

New Website!

I'm pretty happy with my new website. I think it's easy to use and even after staring at it for 5,000,000 hours, I still find the design satisfying. Onward, to the next thing on my job hunting "to do" list.

75 Years of DC Comics

I did this for Comic-Con's 2010 souvenir book (they have a fan art section). I'm curious to see if people get the gag or if it doesn't work.

Heroes in a Half Shell ...

While in California I met with the fine folks at Nickelodeon about an internship. The woman I spoke with the most seemed to dig what I'd included in my portfolio, but commented that I could use just a couple more examples of animation specific work. When I got home I put together these drawings to fill the gaps she pointed out.

For those who don't know (how could you not know?!), Nickelodeon recently acquired all the rights to the Ninja Turtles. Another of the Nickelodeon guys suggested I do some more Turtles work, so that's why they are my subject.

My goals with these designs were:
-Give each turtle a distinct design, based on personality. Traditionally, all four turtles look pretty much identical. Why can't each look like his character?
-Make the turtles actually look like stylized turtles. I haven't found their past designs to look especially turtle-like.
-Appeal to everyone, but target kids. I'm not sure what Nickelodeon would say about their target audience, but that might be what I would say about it. Plus, the most recent Turtles cartoon was definitely for the tween and teen audience, so this is a nice change.

I really hope I get the internship, because I really enjoy what Nickelodeon does and would love to be a part of it.

Star Wars Animated Poster

I'm visiting San Francisco this week to show my stuff around. One of the organizations I plan to get my work in front of is Lucasfilm. To show my love for their big property, I made this poster, based on the "Clone Wars" cartoon currently on Cartoon Network. But instead of featuring stories between episodes II and III, my version is supposed to fill in the gaps between the original flick and Empire. It gives me a chance to show that I can work with an established style and still do my own thing with it. Fingers crossed ...

More life drawings! (and mall sketches!)

I've got some new drawing directives that I scrawled on the front of my sketchbook (along with a note that instructs me to READ and THINK about the directives before I start drawing). So the drawings below, done over the last three days, were executed with the following directives in mind:

-draw quickly
-draw bold!
-work big to small
-push the shapes

I think I did rather well. Could do better, but still rather well.
